Pityriasis rosea is occasionally itchy. The first sign of pityriasis rosea is the herald patch; a single scaly round to oval patch 2-10 cm in diameter. Up to 2 weeks after the herald patch appears, a more widespread rash develops comprised of small oval patches with fine scale usually ranging in size up to 1.5 cm.
Pityriasis alba, a common skin disorder in children and young adults, most commonly between ages 3 and 16 years. [ 1] It is characterized by the presence of ill-defined, scaly, faintly erythematous patches. These lesions eventually subside, leaving hypopigmented areas (see the image below) that then slowly return to normal pigmentation.
Pityriasis means a type of fine skin scaling, and versicolor means changing colour. It is a common and harmless rash due to the overgrowth of yeasts that live on everyone’s skin. These yeasts, called Malassezia, are not related to yeast in food or to those that cause thrush. It is also sometimes called tinea versicolor.
